Thirty Seconds to Mars and Dita Von Teese Tease 'Up in the Air'
APRIL 17, 2013

Rockers slowly unveiling new video for next single

Thirty Seconds to Mars are teasing their new video and short film for their single "Up in the Air" with a set of previews throughout this week. In this exclusive clip, Dita Von Teese strikes a pose in an empty warehouse while riding a pink mechanical bull. "Mars Is Coming" reads the clip before spurting a frantic mishmash of animal and symbolic imagery.
"This short film is quite unlike anything we have ever done before," frontman Jared Leto tells Rolling Stone. "With contributions from Damien Hirst, Dita Von Teese, US Olympic gymnasts McKayla Maroney and Jordyn Wieber, Maxwell Snow, Neil Strauss, a lion, wolf, a snake and, yes, some zebras, we take an epic, bizarre and hallucinogenic journey through a incredibly surreal landscape. It was exciting to explore new territory and once again work with the maniacal Bartholomew Cubbins [Leto's Dr. Seuss-inspired pseudonym] at the helm."
Thirty Seconds to Mars' album Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams will be out May 21st on Virgin.

Thirty Seconds to Mars debuts single in space
March 18, 2013

Jared Leto at 2013's SXSW Festival.

Rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars wanted their latest studio album to be out of this world -- and that's just where the album's first single debuted.
"Up in the Air" was sent to the International Space Station for an exclusive listening party Monday, and the rest of us earthlings will get to listen on Tuesday. The new album, "Love Lust Faith + Dreams," will be available May 21.
A CD containing the song was launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on March 1. The band got to watch the rocket blast into space.
"It was amazing to feel it take off," frontman Jared Leto said. "The noise and the brightness was overwhelming, and you're still a mile away."
Leto said the challenge of sending a song into space paled in comparison to being sued for $30 million by EMI when the band was working on "This Is War," released in 2009, which sold over 500,000 copies. The band also launched an aggressive world tour to promote the CD.
"The last album was about closure. There was a battle and a war that we fought. This one is a new beginning," the 41-year-old singer-actor said.
The new single "has to do with getting to a point in your life where you're ready to let go of the past, embrace change and become more of who you really are," Leto said.
Leto said the out-of-this-world debut for the new album was fitting after the enormous weight of the lawsuit was lifted, even though sending a CD into space was no easy task. "Most worthy things are not easy to get done. I think a lot of great things have a tremendous amount of challenge, a tremendous amount of difficulty, and I think this was one of those things," he said.
Leto said he wrote and recorded more than 70 songs before determining the final 12 for the new album. "My songs must feel like discarded lovers because I'm continuously abandoning time. But that feels better than being sued."
IN 2008, EMI sued the band for breach of contract. The lawsuit was eventually resolved, and the band has continued working with EMI.
"That $30 million lawsuit in that battle was very real. It wasn't a headline. It was something we thought about every single moment of the day that was there, weighing on us. And not just the fact that we would lose and owe a corporation $30 million, but we would have our creative lives stamped out," Leto said.
The documentary "Artifact" chronicles the production of the band's third album.
"The film is highly critical of the record business, but I'm not anti-record label, at all. I'm anti-greed. I'm anti-corruption," Leto said. "I'm pro-artist. I believe that everybody can win. You don't have to steal from one another to do it, or to treat one another unfairly."
"Artifact" won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and was recently shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
While things are back to normal, Leto feels the "cuts are still fresh."
"I think they're healing. But they're definitely not healed yet. It takes some time. The good news is that there's an entirely new group that's running things. It's essentially a new record company," Leto said.
The band, which also includes Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicivic, will begin a world tour in June to support the new album.
Meanwhile, Leto will return to the big screen this year, starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in the AIDS drama "Dallas Buyers Club."
"I hadn't made a film for five years, and this role came along to play a transsexual in a film about the birth of this horrible plague. I wasn't looking to make a film, or to take five years off, either," Leto said.
A conversation between astronaut Tom Marshburn from the International Space Station and Leto will be available on both the band's and NASA's websites.

Thirty Seconds To Mars Unveil Trailer For 'Up In The Air' Short Film
Mar 21 2013

Take an exclusive sneak peek at some of Mars' epic new short film for 'Up In The Air.'

When Thirty Seconds To Mars posted a lengthy (and insanely specific) casting call on their official site earlier this year — one looking for "a very large pet snake," "albino men/women/children" and "a chemist who does science experiments," amongst other things — you knew that had something big in the works.

And now, we're bringing you an exclusive sneak peek at just what they've been working on — a trailer for the "Up In The Air" short film, which seems to follow in the footsteps 2010's "Hurricane" mini-movie, in that it is once again directed by the mysterious (wink, wink) Bartholomew Cubbins ... and it's general largesse.
Over a bed of ominous music, we catch quick glimpses of a wolf, a lion, a line of soldiers, a plus-sized model and a mechanical bull (to name just a few), and, as Jared Leto explained to MTV News, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Because "Up In The Air" is a short film in just about everyconceivable way.
"It's hard to call it a 'music video,' because it encapsulates not just the song, but many songs form the record, and we have an incredible cast of characters: the art of Damien Hirst, and an artist in New York, Maxwell Snow, who came and set a bunch of sh-- on fire," he said. "We have the U.S. Olympic Women's gymnasts, we have Dita Von Teese, we have some Cirque du Soleil performers, we have Shannon, Tomo and me, we have a zebra, a lion, a wolf, a snake, some birds, over 100 butterflies ...it's a Noah's Ark."
There's still no firm release date for the "Up In The Air" short film — Mars will release their brand new album, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS on May 21 — but based on what we've just seen, said date can't come soon enough. Get ready ... this one looks like it's going to be epic.
