Interview: Thirty Seconds To Mars Attempt To Have Fun On New Album
March 22, 2013

"It’s really passionate, there’s a lot of energy… it’s a celebration."

For Thirty Seconds To Mars, the making of their latest album, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMSwas a piece of cake. Especially compared to their previous go-round.
“It was interesting to make an album without so much conflict in our lives,” Jared Leto toldRadio.com. “Because the last album we battled our record company and there was this massive lawsuit.”
While recording 2009’s This Is War, Leto, his brother Shannon and guitarist Tomo Miličević, were sued for $30 million by their label, EMI, for failing to deliver the third of five albums. The band eventually made a documentary centered around the breach of contract lawsuit called Artifact, which Leto directed under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cubbins. The film has been making the festival rounds and recently played SXSW.

“This album was really fun,” said Leto. “We didn’t have that pressure. We didn’t have those distractions.”
Without all the hoopla surrounding their new record, out May 21, the band was able to actually enjoy themselves. But that’s not to say the album is totally happy-go-lucky.
“I think the album is really intense,” Leto said. “It’s really passionate, there’s a lot of energy… it’s a celebration.”

During the two-year recording process, the guys hit the studio in cities all over the world, including Paris, Berlin and a small mining town in Austria called Schladming. But Leto said they actually had the most fun recording at a studio located 45 minutes away from where they live in California.
“There was a period of time where we rented a house in Malibu,” he said. “We spent a little time out there working on [the song] ‘Conquistador,’ overlooking the ocean. It was really magical, unforgettable.”

Sergio Says! Musings From Cosmo (and Beyond...)
2013 March 22

Cosmo's Sergio Kletnoy has been one busy boy this week, between hobnobbing with Jared Leto andAshley Olsen and tipping back cocktails with the Cosmo staff. Jeals? There's more!
MondayAfter hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock at least a few dozen times, I finally made it into the office at 10:36 a.m. JoCo is at The White House, so I knew my day was going to be free of phone calls, e-mails, or check-ins. This was my time to sit back, relax, grab a Coca-Cola Zero Cherry, and not worry about making 18 cups of tea in-between meetings, conference calls, and layout approvals. For the rest of the day I instructed everyone to call me Bueller“Yup, I said it before and I’ll say it again, life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” And I’m not missing it!

Tuesday
A few years back, during my final stint in the music biz at Virgin Records, I got a chance to work with Jared, Shannon, and Tomislav from a “little” known band called 30 Seconds To Mars during their second album, A Beautiful Lie. I remember thinking, "great, Jordan Catalano (if you don’t know this reference I have no love for you) is now a singer." Let’s add him to the long list: Don Johnson, Bruce Willis, Russell Crow, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Kostner, Steven Seagal… Shall I go on? David Hasselhoff, Billy Bob Thornton, William Shatner, Korey Feldman, Kevin Bacon, Keanu Reeves, Eddie Murphy, John Travolta. Okay, I’ll stop. But then I heard The Kill, and suddenly it all made sense. This wasn’t Jared Leto’s hobby or a side project. This was passion and love for music, and the one thing in the world that can bring us all together, no matter what language we speak. Today I got to hang with the band at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studio (Patti’s Horses, Bowie’s Young Americans, AC/DC’s Back in Black, and The Stones’ Some Girls are just a few of the albums that were recorded there) and hear new music from Love Lust Faith + Dreams, their fourth album that's released on May 21st and produced by Jared with four of the 12 songs co-produced by the master Steve Lillywhite (U2, Stones, Morrissey, Dave Matthews Band & Peter Gabriel). I was completely blown away by the cinematic masterpiece! What I heard wasn’t an evolution, it was a full-on attack on mind, body, and soul. I was also one of the lucky few to interview the boys before the event for an upcoming issue. The album’s artwork features Damien Hirst’s “Isonicotinic Acid Ethyl Ester” (2010 - 2011) from his Spot Paintings series, and the single was launched a few days ago into space with NASA. Oh, and did I mention, the epitome of cool - Ashley Olsen - was a few feet away from me during the listening session? Yeah, I’m jealous of me, too. Since the album won’t be out for two more months, you need to get your hands on “Up In The Air,” the exhilarating first single. It’s the ultimate mind-f***, a trip to the moon and back in four minutes and 36 seconds. I don’t smoke, but I was craving a cigarette after the first listen. IT’S THAT GOOD!

Wednesday
Every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. while THE BOSS is on her 15th cup of English Breakfast tea, Cosmo’s Southwest conference room transforms into party central where the staff gets to unwind and enjoy a cocktail, similar to that on RuPaul’s Drag Race, minus the pink furry box and the Interior Illusions Lounge. Today, reps from Qui Tequila treated us to Tamarind Mint Margarita’s, the rest of the evening was a big blur…

ThursdayWhile Marie Claire’s Kyle Anderson is enjoying his newfound fame and celebrating finally getting verified on Twitter (remember, it’s lonely at the top!), I am sorting through my mail and dreaming of Kyle in Givenchy. Just a few items that came across my desk this week: Citizens of Humanity magazine (if I’m not in it, I don’t care); Matthew Williamson’s new coffee table book from Rizzoli (stunning!); a Marc Jacobs designed Diet Coke bottle (it would look better with my face on it!); Deutsch Vogue with Tina Turner on the cover (she’s The Best!), See’s Chocolate Candies (from my friend Chanel); Tate’s Chocolate Chip cookies (is cookie a carb?), two iPhone cases and headphones from chicBuds (chic!);Kenya Moore’s Booty Boot Camp workout DVD (that title is suited more for a dirty film); three books – Nice Is Just A Place In France, What Would Grace Do? and All Men Are Jerks (are these available on CD?); two nCipio hot pink & blue iPhone cases (LOVE!), Issey Miyake’s L’eau Dissey Pour Homme Summer cologne (Yum!); Eat Whatever 2 Steps To Kissable Breath kit (useful); 36 CD’s for reviews (not enough hours in a week); a nude print of a couple fornicating (if it isn’t a naked celeb I’m not interested); andSalma Hayek’s new beauty set (cleanser, mask, moisturizer, pads & blotting papers) packaged in a glass box with flowers and lemons (anything Salma touches is gold)… And since I’m not a hoarder, one of these has Kyle’s congratulations gift written all over it!

Thirty Seconds to Mars debuts single in space
March 18, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars wanted the announcement for their latest studio album to be out of this world. And that's where the album's first single debuted.
"Up in the Air" was sent to the International Space Station for an exclusive listening Monday. It will be released Tuesday on Earth.
The new album, "Love Lust Faith + Dreams," will be available May 21.
A compact disc containing the song was launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on March 1. The band got to watch the rocket blast into space.
"It was amazing to feel it take off," frontman Jared Leto said in a recent interview. "The noise and the brightness was overwhelming, and you're still a mile away."
Leto said the challenge of sending a song into space paled in comparison to being sued for $30 million by EMI when the band was working on "This Is War," released in 2009, which sold over 500,000 copies. The band also launched an aggressive world tour to promote the CD.
"The last album was about closure. There was a battle and a war that we fought. This one is a new beginning," the 41-year-old singer-actor said.
The new single "has to do with getting to a point in your life where you're ready to let go of the past, embrace change and become more of who you really are," Leto said.
The lawsuit was eventually resolved, and the band has continued working with EMI. Leto said the out-of-this-world debut for the new album was fitting after the enormous weight of the lawsuit was lifted, although sending a CD into space was no easy task.
"Most worthy things are not easy to get done. I think a lot of great things have a tremendous amount of challenge, a tremendous amount of difficulty, and I think this was one of those things," he said.
Leto said he wrote and recorded more than 70 songs before determining the final 12 for the new album.
"My songs must feel like discarded lovers because I'm continuously abandoning time," he said. "But that feels better than being sued."
EMI sued the band in 2008 for breach of contract.
"That $30 million lawsuit in that battle was very real. It wasn't a headline. It was something we thought about every single moment of the day that was there, weighing on us. And not just the fact that we would lose and owe a corporation $30 million, but we would have our creative lives stamped out," Leto said.
Their documentary, "Artifact," chronicles the production of the band's third album.
"The film is highly critical of the record business, but I'm not anti-record label, at all. I'm anti-greed. I'm anti-corruption," Leto said. "I'm pro-artist. I believe that everybody can win. You don't have to steal from one another to do it, or to treat one another unfairly."
"Artifact" won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and was recently shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
While things are back to normal, Leto feels the "cuts are still fresh."
"I think they're healing. But they're definitely not healed yet. It takes some time. The good news is that there's an entirely new group that's running things. It's essentially a new record company," Leto said.
The band, which also includes Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicivic, will begin a world tour in June to support the new album.
Meanwhile, Leto will return to the big screen this year, starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in the AIDS drama, "Dallas Buyers Club."
"I hadn't made a film for five years, and this role came along to play a transsexual in a film about the birth of this horrible plague. I wasn't looking to make a film, or to take five years off, either," Leto said.
A conversation between astronaut Tom Marshburn from the International Space Station and Leto will be available on both the band's and NASA's websites.

30 SECONDS TO MARS PREPARING ALBUM OF A LIFETIME
22nd March 2013

ROCK giants 30 Seconds To Mars have re-invented themselves to “make the album of a lifetime”.

Jared Leto, 41, brother Shannon, 43, and Tomo Milicevic, 33, drop Love Lust Faith + Dreams on May 20.

I’ve had an early listen to the record and the exciting, grandiose, glam-rock stompers are brilliant.

Frontman Jared told me: “It’s a new beginning. A lot of people are going to be very surprised.

“It’s important when you make an album you rediscover and redefine.

“I do think we’ve made the album of a lifetime.

“It was time for us to move in a completely different direction.”

The trio launched new single Up In The Air by sending it into space and Jared explained: “We got to visit Nasa twice. We were talking with astronauts via video about life in space.

“In the middle of our conversation one reached out, picked up our CD and spun it around so it was floating at zero gravity.

“It was a real unforgettable moment. Our grandfather was in the Air Force as a pilot so aviation and flight is in our DNA.
“My brother and I were really excited.”

The disc’s cover was designed by artist Damien Hirst, 47, and resembles his spotty BRIT Award.

Jared revealed: “I’ve always been inspired by Damien.

“3STM, Nasa and Damien Hirst have something in common – at their core a lot of what we all do is about making dreams reality.”

German photographer Martin Rietze has taken a series of terrifying, yet breathtaking photos of a volcano eruption that happened recently in Japan.
The photos show the Sakurajima volcano in Kyushu erupting with great destructive force—spewing a rain of lava and volcanic ash—as well as generating flashes of lightning through a thick cloud of smoke.
According to the Daily Mail, Rietze is part of a group of volcano-chasers who seek out volatile volcanoes—braving huge electric storms and molten lava just to get the perfect shots.
