Jared Interview for TechCrunch! ♥

To Infinity And Beyond: Buzz Lightyear, T-Pain, Hot Chocolate And Technology
Monday, October 8th, 2012

I’m at the #BoxWorks conference in San Francisco this week, which is an odd place for me to be at first glance. Why odd? Because I don’t really get into or cover “enterprise” technology. It’s nothing against the vertical: I’m just usually involved with smaller startups trying to change the world for people like my Mom.
Someone asked me today if I’d like to sit down with a Los Angeles-based entrepreneur, and of course I said yes. But I couldn’t help but think, “Please, don’t pitch me on this whole Silicon Beach thing, because that drives me insane.” Luckily, this wasn’t the case.
When I sat down with this gent, a few things came up, including why he’s involved in technology in the first place. His answers were interesting, introspective and made a lot of sense. It was a pretty refreshing conversation, I have to say.
Here’s our talk:
TC: You have a couple of startups. Why?
Entrepreneur Guy: I have three companies. I’m working on a social theater to share content right now, but without advertising. Advertising won’t save the world. If you want to have quality meanginful experiences, it probably won’t be free, just like a quality meal or product. Consumers are going to have to part with something in their brain instead of watch ads.
TC: What’s so different about LA and SF?
Entrepreneur Guy: Quite a bit, I love coming here, I meet so many smart people. I’m a high school dropout and had my own unique education. I ended up going back to art school and studied to be a painter. I’ve always been a problem solver, so for me to do what I’m doing is natural.
TC: What is your number one hurdle with having companies in LA?
Entrepreneur Guy: You have the same hurdles anywhere — how to build an unstoppable team and execute the vision. Those are the challenges you face everywhere, though, whether you’re a beach or a bungalow. There are more challenges being in Los Angeles, especially in talent. But over three companies we have 27 employees all over the place, so it doesn’t really matter.
TC: What are your favorite apps/sites/businesses right now?
Entrepreneur Guy: I like Path a lot. I am an investor for full disclosure. I think they’re unmatched as far as design and execution. They have a great leader, and they do something really excellent. They had the foresight to get into that space really early on. I think they’ve done a great job and shown how important design can be.
TC: How have your goals changed as your career and life evolved?
Entrepreneur Guy: I’ve always enjoyed making things and sharing things with people. I’m a creative person and like to share things I’ve made. That’s remained a constant throughout my life. Along the way, I’ve found that achievement gives you the strength and confidence to move forward and tackle other dreams. There’s the dilemma of saying no to yourself as well. You can’t walk down two paths at one time. You have to be careful of what you bring into your life. I haven’t always been the most confident that I had enough to contribute, but that voice should be ignored as much as possible for people. Be brave and get into action.
BOX AS SPRINGBOARD
Overall, I feel like I had a pretty interesting conversation with someone who is extremely passionate about changing the world. Where does Box fit into all of this? Well, the service is a platform, and its conference is serving as the same. Not all of the conversations today revolve around the cloud, but just like its platform, Box is making itself the place to springboard everything.
Oh, and the fellow that I talked to? You might have heard of him, Jared Leto. Instead of just thinking of his movies or music, maybe now you feel like you know him a bit more. He’s just one of the many folks trying to trailblaze a road for continual creation and creativity. That’s pretty rad.

Jared Leto Weight Loss: Actor Fasted For 'Dallas Buyers Club' Role (PHOTO, VIDEO)

Jared Leto is dedicated to his craft. So dedicated, in fact, that he has fasted for the past month to embody his "Dallas Buyers Clubs" character, whittling down to a shockingly thin frame that has made him virtually unrecognizable.
Leto opened up about his dramatic weight loss for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club" during an interview with Vulture on Tuesday at the IFP Gotham Awards. "Your body goes through weird stages," Leto told Vulture of fasting. "Sometimes it's hard to hold on to water. But for me, it's not about the most weight I can lose, it's more to represent the character. I'm focused on what it means to be a transsexual woman."

At the awards show, some reporters didn't even notice the "My So-Called Life" heartthrob on the red carpet. "He actually looks like a young Courteney Cox," quipped Showbiz 411's Paula Schwartz. She added, "few journalists bothered interviewing him because they didn’t recognize who he was."
Leto apologized to the audience that night for his fast-inducing lightheadedness and his shaved eyebrows. Despite the physical toll, he has found deeper meaning in his transformation, telling Vulture, "Historically, people have done it for pursuit of self, to achieve a meditative state, so I'm hoping for that, and not the other things. It's not necessarily a bad thing."
This is not the first time Leto has drastically changed his weight for a movie role, ABC News notes. He lost 25 pounds to play a drug addict in 2000's "Requiem for a Dream," then gained 60 pounds to play Mark David Chapman in 2007's "Chapter 27."
In "Dallas Buyers Club," the 40-year-old plays Rayon, a transsexual woman with AIDS living in Texas in the 1980s. On-set photos of the actor dressed in drag surfaced earlier this month.
Leto's "Dallas Buyers Club" co-star, Matthew McConaughey, has also become dramatically skinny for his role. In the film, he plays Ron Woodroof, a drug taking, women loving, homophobic man who is diagnosed with AIDS in 1986.
McConaughey, who has had to drop 40 pounds from his 183-pound frame, also tries to view the weight loss goal differently. "If anything, it's as much a spiritual journey as it is physical," he told People magazine.

Jared Leto In Lady Makeup Or A Lady In Jared Leto Makeup: Which Is More Impressive?
Posted

We pit Jared Leto in drag makeup against a woman madeup to look like Jared Leto.

Around these parts of the Internet, Chrissy Mahlmeister is our resident Commander-in-Chief of all things Jared Leto. From his recent absence of eyebrows to his one-time mulletand difficulties with knits, she has it all committed to memory and organized in pristine little Oxford manila tab dividers. HOWEVER, given my preoccupation with the style world's bizarro underbelly (Ex. AB, and C) and a deep appreciation for makeup artistry, I'm borrowing the reins momentarily for a very important question. Which is more impressive: Jared Leto in lady makeup for his upcoming role in Dallas Buyers Club OR this lady (a.k.a.selfOblivion) who made an INCREDIBLE tutorial for Jared Leto makeup?

On one hand, we're hypnotized by Jared's baby blues shrouded in luscious fake lashes and warm peachy eye shadow. We've ALWAYS been jealous of his cheekbones, but now, we want to know what shade and brand of blush he's using. And while we're at it, what is that lipstick because we HAVE to have it. Right now. Also, everyone knows we love a good drag queen and those Rayon nails are next level. The lady in Leto makeup, though, is, in our opinion, another ballgame entirely.
We've been haunted by selfOblivion's Jared Leto makeup tutorial for YEARS. We can't tell you the exact number of hours we've spent slack-jawed in wonderment at this girl's unbelievable beauty skills, but rest assured, it's staggering. And our reaction every time is pretty much the same one Jared himself had when he saw it: "Holy fkng shit. Have you seen this?"
This girl magician takes a very simple toolkit — 1 concealer, 2 eye pencils (black and white), 1 black liquid eyeliner, 2 matte eye shadows (black and brown), 1 loose powder, 1 hair spray (which she uses on the eyebrows), water colors (which she uses to fill in the beard), and a modified black wig — and 100% effectively turns her own ladyface into Jared Leto. We've watched it SO many times, and STILL, each time it's unbelievable. If you haven't watched it before, peep the full how-to video below, and let us know whose makeup look you think is more impressive!
