MTV Interview about 'Chapter 27' movie

Jared Leto Explains Why He Avoided Lindsay Lohan On 'Chapter 27' Set

Actor/rocker also riffs on packing pounds, portraying John Lennon's killer.

PARK CITY, Utah — If the Sundance Film Festival has a king this year, one could safely assume Jared Leto might be the one sitting on the throne. In a rare convergence of talent, the 35-year-old appeared as the svelte lead singer for 30 Seconds to Mars for a packed-like-sardines concert on Saturday, and then returned onscreen three days later and 50 pounds heavier for Tuesday's premiere of the controversial flick "Chapter 27," which deals with the days leading up to the fatal shooting of John Lennon. We caught up with Leto for an eye-opening conversation about the successes Leto has achieved over the past year, the day Lennon died and the movie role opposite Lindsay Lohan that almost killed him.

MTV: I saw your 30 Seconds to Mars show the other day — it was such a small, intimate place with only a few hundred people. You guys were great.
Jared Leto: We don't often get the chance to play shows like that. Sometimes they're challenging in their own unique ways, but we had a fun time. It was a really unique, guttural experience because we were so close to the audience. ... We've been playing a lot of shows over the year, so it was nice to come up here and share the band a bit with Sundance. My life as an actor and as a musician collided this week in the best of ways.

MTV: You're up here with "Chapter 27," a movie that has you portraying Mark David Chapman — the man who killed John Lennon. Why would you want to make a movie about this guy?
Leto: It was a question I asked myself when I read the script. It wasn't a decision I made lightly. It took a lot of consideration to make what I believe to be a pretty important decision, of whether or not to take on this film. But ultimately, it was an opportunity to discover the failure of humanity. Mark David Chapman is an example of the failure of humanity, and John Lennon is probably one of the best examples of the most wonderful aspects of humanity. I think that, to explore the uncomfortable and the politically incorrect, is the job of the artist.

MTV: You were 9 when Lennon was shot. What memories do you have of that day?
Leto: I was a kid, and I remember my mom looking at the newspaper and bursting into tears.

MTV: Most movies have a sympathetic lead character. A lot of the people who are attacking this movie without having seen it assume you're making Chapman sympathetic. Was that your point?
Leto: No, it wasn't our goal at all. I'm not of the belief that Mark David Chapman deserves any sympathy, and we weren't after that at all. I think empathy is a much more interesting word for this project. Understanding. ... Every week at the box office we explore films about escapism — romantic comedies, action movies or whatever. It's important to also examine the failures of humanity.

MTV: As soon as you walk onscreen, it's obvious that you pulled a De Niro. How much weight did you put on and how did you do it?
Leto: It was probably the most difficult thing that I've ever done in my entire life, for sure. It was a devastating process; there wasn't a single moment of joy for the months that I worked on it. Moments of reward and fulfillment, certainly, but it was a process that — rightfully so — was filled with pain, disgust and confusion. We talked at the beginning about whether I should wear a fat suit or not, but it was really important to me to gain the weight for a few specific reasons. It changed every single thing about who I was as a human being. It changed the way that I walked, it changed the way that I talked, it changed the way I felt about myself and the way people looked at me and treated me.

MTV: What was your secret? Were you eating nothing but hamburgers and pancakes for five months?
Leto: Well, I don't eat meat, so no hamburgers. But I was eating every single thing you can think of eating that would be bad for you. ... I almost wish that I had made a film about the making of the film, because it was definitely a super-sized version of "Super Size Me." It was doctors telling me I needed to stop, that I was going to kill myself, my cholesterol shooting up to 300-something points — which is bad. They wanted to put me on Lipitor and all kinds of medication. ... Food is the strongest medication we take every day. What I was doing was poisoning myself with some really severe methods. It was a fascinating, but devastating, experience.

MTV: Did you ever play with the band while fat?
Leto: No. When I focus on a film, I disappear and focus on that completely. It's the same thing when I'm on tour or in the studio making music: I commit and focus on that completely. I kinda have the opposite of ADD. I have a hyper-focused disorder, where if there's a given task in front of me I really concentrate on that. ... Eight days [after filming wrapped] I was on the road, so I was heavy for a few shows.

MTV: With her roles in "Chapter 27" (as a Lennon groupie) and last year's "Bobby," Lindsay Lohan seems to be putting the kid roles behind her. What was her work ethic like?
Leto: This kind of film presents you with an opportunity and a challenge. ... We all tried to move together with as much dignity and respect for the people and the event itself ... all of us were very excited to take on the challenge, to learn a little bit about ourselves as human beings. A film like this ... demands a lot out of you. It's not like making a rom-com.

MTV: What kind of conversations did you and Lindsay have between takes? It must have been a fairly depressing set.
Leto: I didn't speak to anybody. I was in character 24 hours a day. For me, it was an experience that I had to have alone. The character was very isolated, and I took that approach as well. I had a very religious approach to developing the character. It's not like the director said, "Cut!" and everyone was able to laugh and go get a drink and talk about something extraneous.

MTV: Did you ever meet Chapman and/or Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono?
Leto: No, I didn't. Anything after December 8, 1980, had no interest to me. I took the approach of [knowing] everything from the day of his birth to that horrible night of December 8, 1980, where John Lennon lost his life. ... This is a film that's going to forever be a defining element of who I am as an actor and as a person. I knew that going in.

MTV: What's coming up for 30 Seconds to Mars?
Leto: We're getting ready to go to Europe. I'm here until the 25th and then I head straight to Europe for a couple weeks, and then we start the Taste of Chaos [tour]. It will be all over the country, and we're excited. [Last year was] one of the best years of our lives ... so getting back on the road and celebrating it with everybody is what we're looking forward to doing.

MTV: Any movies coming up?
Leto: I tend to beat myself up so badly making these films. [He laughs.] It's probably best to do as few as possible.

Jared Leto Reveals Secret Passions: Rock Climbing and Raw Foods
Tuesday March 25, 2008
Jared Leto Reveals Secret Passions: Rock Climbing and Raw Foods | Jared Leto

Movies and music are great and all. But what really makes Jared Leto happy? Rock climbing and health food.
"My real passion is an occupation no one knows about," the singer-actor told PEOPLE Monday, when he rocked the My Coke Fest in Cape Town, South Africa. "I'm a closet rock climber. I love being on the edge."
That much was certainly obvious during his set with 30 Seconds to Mars. The 35-year-old daredevil – who broke his nose during a recent concert when he rushed into the crowd – climbed a two-story stage scaffolding and greet the crowd with "How are you motherf---ers?"
But he reached even greater heights that weekend. "I hiked up Cape Town's Table Mountain yesterday," he said. "It was magic. Close to heaven."
The actor – who famously piled on 60 lbs. for his role as David Mark Chapman in the new Chapter 27 – looked as lean as ever during the music festival (which also featured Good Charlotte and the Kaiser Chiefs).
"I gorged to get fat and I think my body went into shock," Leto said. "It took me about a year to recover."
His secret to getting back into shape? "Health food," said the strict vegetarian. "Everyday. I will eat anything that doesn't have taste – like unsalted nuts, raw food and berries."

AMERICAN HORROR STORYPrashant Gupta / FX
"After everything that has happened, how can you still be so blind?"
Such is the question Constance (Jessica Lange) poses to Ben (Dylan McDermott) when he drops in on her to take back his baby son. And speaking of questions, our exclusive clip of next week's American Horror Story finale sure does raise a lot more of them…
For starters, why does Ben want to bring his son back into that evil house? Is he that deep in denial? Also, it seems that Constance may be hell-bent on keeping that child in her possession, but her reasoning is legitimate. And finally, how is Ben handling the death of his daughter and his wife? Constance would sure like to know.
So many questions and still so many days away until the finale to get answers! Check out our first look at "After Birth" below, and we'll see you in the comments for one last round of speculation.

Echelon Tour Review

December 16th, 2011

New York, New York – MARS300, December 7, 2011
by Mirna Miljevic

I have been lucky enough to see Mars live four times, all during the TIW cycle. Each time was, absolutely and positively, an experience of a lifetime.
The farthest I’ve traveled to see Mars was to NYC for MARS300. And it was beyond worth it. The entire trip was filled with moments and memories I will carry with me forever.
Anyone who knows me knows that Night Of The Hunter is the song that means the most to me. It’s a song that has brought a lot of amazing things into my life. Hearing it live during Mars300 was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. From the very first note to the last, it was breathtaking. I felt more in those few minutes than I have in a very long time. And even though I cried the entire time, I felt alive. So alive. So free. Like I was letting go of a thousand bad things, things I didn’t even realize I was holding onto. It was such a beautiful moment. And it was made that much better because it was a moment shared with some really amazing Echelon.
Everything about seeing Mars is memorable. From the moment Tomo, Jared, and Shannon hit the stage, to the very last note of K&Q, and the inevitable goodbye. It’s a million little moments, one following another, that make the concert the incredible night that it always is. From Tomo giving it his all as he plays, and you can see it in every move he makes. To Shannon just truly being a beast and playing those drums with so much ferocity it never fails to take my breath away. To Jared spilling his heart and soul on that stage. To those moments when the entire crowd sings every word of every song as though we are one. That is true beauty, if I have ever seen it.
So we have laughed, and we have cried. We made friendships and memories that will last forever. We owned the night time and time again. We’ve jumped and touched the sky, and gotten down real low. We will never forget, and we will never regret. So many dreams have come true for so many of us. But now we have to say goodbye. There are hearts breaking, and tears being shed all across the world. But regardless of what may come next, we all have each other. And we have so many Mars memories to carry us on through the toughest days. For me, that is more than enough.
Until we meet again.

Styleranking Interview with Jared
28.10.2011

JPG JPG JPG

Jared Leto acted in some of the most formative movies of the last years. Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream or American Psycho. But he hasn’t been seen on screen for a long time now. Instead he is touring with his Rock band 30 seconds to mars around the world. Now the magazine GQ selected him in the category style at the choice of the men of the year 2011! Although he is not thinking much about his outfits, he told our interviewer Gabriele shortly before the awards show.

Most people may know u through your movies. But u are also successfully making music since nearly ten years now with your band 30 seconds to mars. Does it annoy u being asked over and over again why so many Hollywood stars are frustrated musicians?
JL: no, i don’t care what people think. I think that a lot of creative people are interested in various creative sectors. Painters are interested in sculpting, sculptors are interested in other aspects. So, too, are sportsman often interested in different kind of sports. Sometimes a soccer player wanna play baseball too. If people have dealed with a special field of activity, they wanna experience different kind of aspects.

Nevertheless most people will still know u as an actor…
JLThat’s not necessarily true.

Has it changed by now?
JL: A lot of people out there do not know me at all. Then there are a lot of people who know me only as a musician, and a lot who know me only as an actor. I think to a big part of my younger audience, I’m not known as an actor

Do you wish sometimes that you never had started acting first in order to be taken more serious as a musician?
JL: No. I dont care about that. By now that’s an old story. I´m doing it for so long now. I think the people have already decided if they like what I do or not.

You are not only making music, you also direct music videos, design album covers, write songs. You´ll never get tired of that?
JL: I love to explore new territories. That’s exciting and i learn something new. We are involved into something when we learn, we are challenged and enriched.

Most recently, the focus seems to be very strong on the music
JL: Music, editing, directing, production. And im dealing with graphic design and manage my own companies. But being an artist, organizing chaos, to create something from nothing – that’s probably what I do best.

However, its been quiet a long time that I´ve seen you in a movie.
JL: m-hm. Isn’t that great??

No, it’s a pity because you got very good critics for most of you movies. don’t you miss the acting at all?
JL: No, not particularly. I have to say i’m quite satisfied. Besides i’m completely busy. There are certain things that i like about acting, i love working with creative people. But i don’t miss it that much

What do you like most of making music?
JL: I like to have the control, the responsibility

So you’re the one who bears the responsibility in your band?
JL: In many ways, yes. But even if I should share this task with a few people, its still different than if you share control with hundreds, as in the film. Then there is the whole process: I like to travel, to perform. I like writing and recording the songs, this is a very personal process

You are also not the type who would take things easy. For the role of heroin addict Harry Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream you’ve lost 15 pounds, then you’ve put on weight for Chapter 27, where you played the murderer of John Lennon, more than 30 pounds. Don’t you sometimes feel that you should take more care of you?
JL: We all do things the way we think we should do it. The way it works for us. That’s the way it works for me. When I’m working creatively I like to dive in as deep as possible. The bigger the challenge the more u will have the rewards of it afterwords

What has been more difficult, gaining or loosing weight?
JL: Gaining weight was the bigger challenge

Hollywood is a very shallow pavement. Did the experience of being corpulent change your perception of Hollywood?
JL: Yes, People looked at my differently while i was fat. That changed my appreciation a few. Some people i met didn’t know that it was all for a movie, they thought i just gained weight. It was interesting to see how they treated me.

How did they treat you?
JL: Rather dismissively.

Was it difficult to loose weight again?
JL: It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. Gaining or loosing weight. But that’s what i needed to do to play this role. But i certainly wouldn’t do it again. I’ve done it once in my life, that’s enough!

Couldn’t you imagine a film project worth doing?
JL: I can imagine.its just, i’m too busy at the moment. We are on tour for 2 years in a row. We played Germany 26 times alone.

Most of the movies you made were very artistic, sophisticated, often abysmal and dark. Now for ur advertising of hugos scent u did something quite trivial in front of the camera.. did you hesitate before taking the offer?
JLI’ve hesitated for a decade. People have offered me a lot of different things during the years, but it never felt right before. But for some reason this felt right. And it was right. It was fun. They were looking for someone fit the stereotype …not fitting the stereotype. Someone who is kinda different, and that’s what i am. Besides it was an opportunity to work with friends, it was a wonderful experience. So i don’t regret anything that i’ve done.

So you are not concerned that this could have an affect on your credibility as an artist?
JL: No. I don’t care about that kind of stuff. Other people have to choose whether you have credibility or not. It repose on the art.

I found you on youtube in a very old advertising for levis
JLThat was back in the days when i started acting. It was great. Cause i earned some money to pay my rent, i get some freedom out of it. I was able to go to castings and rehearse with the band.

But that wasn’t the point to do the hugo advertising i guess..
JLNo..i mean..at this point in my life… i never worked for money, only for experiences and opportunities

You wear a very nice suit in the advert. Normally you dont wear those classy-elegant clothes. Did u have to get used to the outfit?
JLAre u saying that i normally dont look elegant?

Well, normally your outfits includes pomegranate hawks, net shirts and red sneakers
JL: For me it was fun to dress up. It was something different. I dont care to dress up from time to time

Where do you get ur inspiration for ur outfits from? Ur style is pretty eccentric
JL: I don’t think much about it. I’m spontaneous. But i respect designers who create witty and unique things.

How do u choose what u wear to certain events?
JL: Today i had the choice between to boss-suits, one black and one red. I choose the red cause i thought it is more fun.
