Thirty Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto On ‘Up In The Air’: “It’s A Brand New Beginning”
March 18, 2013

"This album is a completely new direction."

As promisedThirty Seconds to Mars debuted their new single “Up in the Air” from space this morning (March 18), announcing that the band’s new album, out May 21, will be entitled Love Lust Faith + Dreams.
The band also revealed the album’s cover art, which features “Isonicotinic Acid Ethyl Ester” (2010 – 2011), a piece by world famous artist, Damien Hirst from his Spot Paintings series.
Jared and Shannon Leto, along with guitarist Tomo Miličević phoned KROQ morning show hosts Kevin & Bean from Mission Control at Johnson Space Center in Houston, where later today they’ll be chatting with astronauts and fans via the band’s vyrt.com site and NASA’s website.
“My brother and I, our grandfather was in the Air Force and FAA so aviation was always a big part of our lives,” Jared Leto said about the decision to premiere the song from space. “We used to come visit him in Houston and always used to drive by NASA, so there’s a bit of a history there.”
To further cement the importance of today’s mission, Annise D. Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston, has proclaimed today Thirty Seconds to Mars Day.

“We thought it’s a great beginning to a long conversation that we’re going to be having with this album,” Leto told Kevin & Bean about “Up in the Air.”
“It’s a nice way to start things off. It’s got a lot of energy. This is a brand new experience for us,” the singer continued. “This album is a completely new direction. It’s more than even an evolution, it’s a brand new beginning.”
He added, “It also feels like it could have been something off our first album in a way.”
When asked if the album’s title, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, addressed the themes on the record, Leto joked, “It’s none of your business,” going on to add, “I think those four words all mean something very special to us. They are themes that come up repeatedly in the album. Each of those words is used at least once in every single song on the album.”
