Thirty Seconds To Mars' New Album Is 'An Evolution'
Mar 4 2013

'We've gone to an entirely new place,' Jared Leto tells MTV News about Mars' upcoming album.

Thirty Seconds to Mars' new single hadn't even reached the International Space Station when Jared Leto got on the phone with MTV News to discuss its rather epic (and quite literal) launch on Friday morning ... but, as is often the case with him, he was already moving on to the band's next project: their new album.

"This is the first time I'm really talking about the album, and when you talk about these things it helps you put them into perspective," he said. "I just mastered it two days ago, and we're still toying with it, but it's been turned in and it's finished."

And perspective is definitely necessary; after all, there was a time when it seemed like the album would never happen at all. Thirty Seconds to Mars spent much of the past year recuperating from the whirlwind ride that followed 2009's This Is War, and very openly discussed the idea of calling it quits entirely. But, recharged from their time off the road, they regrouped and got to work on the record that Leto said will come to define them.
"I wrote and recorded about 70 songs for this album, and I think there's a feeling that all of us in the band have that, especially after touring as long as we did last time, that this is a really important album for us; it's a critical album for us," he explained. "It's an evolution, this album is more of who we are than we have ever been before, and we've gone to an entirely new place, which is incredibly exciting. And it's provocative at the same time, because changes bring new opportunities, new challenges, a chance to learn."

Leto added that, though the record has been mastered, there's still no firm release date, and if there's a title, he wasn't ready to reveal it just yet. But all of that will be announced over the coming months ... and once again, Thirty Seconds To Mars are ready to bring their mission to the masses.

"So much of the stuff is TBD, but we've shot a video, we've launched a single, we've finished an album, we have the most incredible things to share with our fans," Leto said. "It's brand-new territory for us, both musically and creatively."

Thirty Seconds To Mars Blast New Single Into Orbit
Mar 1 2013

'Putting your music into space is no easy feat,' frontman Jared Leto tells MTV News.

Thirty Seconds to Mars spent Friday (March 1) morning literally launching their brand new single ... sending the first copy of "Up In The Air" into orbit on board a SpaceX rocket.

And an hour after liftoff, MTV News spoke to frontman Jared Leto from Cape Canaveral, Florida, where he was still trying to wrap his head around everything that had happened. And, for a guy who's witnessed no shortage of amazing things with his Mars mates, well, that's saying something indeed.

"It was a phenomenal morning; it's been a mind-blowing experience, sending our music up into space, where it's pushing into orbit and going around the earth, that's a pretty amazing thing to think about," Leto said. "It seemed impossible; for a moment I played with the idea of a weather balloon, but I had been speaking with NASA for quite some time about ways to find something creative to do together. And I presented them with this idea and here we are."

Leto said the process of getting a copy of the single aboard the SpaceX cargo capsule began months ago — "It wasn't easy," he laughed, "but most worthy things aren't." — and that the decision to launch it into orbit had nothing to do with the song's title. Instead, he and his bandmates were looking to kick off the next chapter of their career in an appropriately massive manner.

"From the beginning, it was clear this was a special song for us. I wrote and recorded about 70 songs for this album, and I think there's a feeling that all of us in the band have that, especially after touring as long as we did last time, that this is a really important album for us ... and 'Up in the Air' is the first step, the beginning of a conversation," he said. "It's a song that has a lot of energy, a lot of optimism, a lot of life in it. And it's incredibly important to me and Shannon and Tomo.

"A core part of what Thirty Seconds To Mars is about is dreams ... creativity and dreams are one in the same," he continued. "And so it's inspiring and challenging to try to make the impossible into reality. And this has certainly been an example of that; putting your music into space is no easy feat."

Jared Leto Debuts Orbis Epsilon Back Tattoo!
Posted

BIG NEWS: after teasing us on Twitter practically nonstop over the past 24 hours, Jared Leto has revealed his brand new back tattoo! The actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman made a deal with his followers yesterday, saying that he would unveil his latest ink once he reached 1 million, and well, it happened. Mere minutes ago. That was quick! (Um, NOT that we were refreshing our Jared Leto Twitter tab, or anything...). He posted the photo of himself facing backwards against a stark blue background this morning, saying "I made you a promise when I hit one million followers. Thank you all! xo" No Jared, thank YOU.
The tat depicts the Orbis Epsilon, otherwise known as a circle divided into two equal parts with four arrows shooting out. And as any member of the 30STM Echelon will tell you, the symbol has been a huge part of the band's merch, philosophy, and even Jared himself. Remember that Orbis Epsilon necklace he rocked back in December? The dude clearly looooves symmetry— he's no stranger to using arrows and triangles in album artwork likeThis Is War— so his new emblem ink makes TOTAL SENSE.
Are you into Jared's new tattoo? Let us know!

Watch Jared Leto's Red Hot Smize In New Hugo Boss Fragrance Commercial
Posted

Jared Leto in his new Hugo Red commerical.

It feels like WAY too long since we last saw 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto in a commercial. Like, way, way too long. Ever since he became the face of Hugo Boss' male fragrance, we've been anxiously awaiting every campaign featuring Jordan Catalano Jared Leto decked out in a perfectly-tailored suit and coiffed hair. *shivers* Lucky for us, our prayers have been answered. Hugo Boss debuted a commercial for their newest fragrance, Hugo Red, during Berlin Fashion Week, and OMG, we can barely handle it.
The ad begins with Jared speed-walking down a runway in a dark gray suit, tank top (gulp), and black boots, and then he suddenly stops at a wall of red lights. As the lights start to flicker on, Jared looks around confused wondering what's about to happen. (Aww, poor bb.) Finally, all lights turn to red, and a raspy voiceover says, "Red means go." Suddenly, Jared begins to smize toward the lights. His smize is so penetrating, in fact, that he SHATTERS ALL THE LIGHTS WITH HIS GAZE. Shards of glass fly toward him, but, of course, he's too badass to even guard himself from potential harm and just stands there like a boss. Eventually, the entire wall of lights comes crashing down, a puff of smoke appears, Jared speed walks toward the camera without breaking eye contact, and we melt into a puddle of ooze. Well, OK, obvi that last part isn't true, but basically this commercial is insane. The relentless stare-down from Jared himself is enough to put anyone over the edge, and, like, if his gaze can shatter glass, what does that mean for us, guys? Are we going to explode any minute now? Should we be worried? *looks over shoulder* If these are my last words, I just want to say I love y'all so much, and it's been a good ride. Peace. Check out the video below to see all the amazingness in action.

Happy Birthday, Jared Leto! We Got You Some New Eyebrows!
Posted

Enjoy your new set of brows, Jared Leto!

Happy birthday, Jared Leto! It's hard to believe you're 41! It's even harder to believe you have no eyebrows! But you're a very busy guy, occupying yourself with 30 Seconds To Mars, and Twitter, and being the world's best vegan (this isn't substantiated or measurable, but it's a feeling I have, and my feelings are usually right), VyRT-ing (I love saying "Vyrt" -- VyRT! VyRT! VyRT! IT WON'T HURT), and diving back into your acting career with your cross-dressing turn in Dallas Buyers Club, which required removing all of your body hair (eyebrows included), nipping, tucking, and whatever else it took to turn into a man turning into a woman. As a woman, I know how time-consuming hair removal can be. So, I decided to speed up the process and get you a brand-new set of brows. Happy birthday, bb!

Jared Leto In Lady Makeup Or A Lady In Jared Leto Makeup: Which Is More Impressive?
Posted

We pit Jared Leto in drag makeup against a woman madeup to look like Jared Leto.

Around these parts of the Internet, Chrissy Mahlmeister is our resident Commander-in-Chief of all things Jared Leto. From his recent absence of eyebrows to his one-time mulletand difficulties with knits, she has it all committed to memory and organized in pristine little Oxford manila tab dividers. HOWEVER, given my preoccupation with the style world's bizarro underbelly (Ex. A, B, and C) and a deep appreciation for makeup artistry, I'm borrowing the reins momentarily for a very important question. Which is more impressive: Jared Leto in lady makeup for his upcoming role in Dallas Buyers Club OR this lady (a.k.a.selfOblivion) who made an INCREDIBLE tutorial for Jared Leto makeup?

On one hand, we're hypnotized by Jared's baby blues shrouded in luscious fake lashes and warm peachy eye shadow. We've ALWAYS been jealous of his cheekbones, but now, we want to know what shade and brand of blush he's using. And while we're at it, what is that lipstick because we HAVE to have it. Right now. Also, everyone knows we love a good drag queen and those Rayon nails are next level. The lady in Leto makeup, though, is, in our opinion, another ballgame entirely.
We've been haunted by selfOblivion's Jared Leto makeup tutorial for YEARS. We can't tell you the exact number of hours we've spent slack-jawed in wonderment at this girl's unbelievable beauty skills, but rest assured, it's staggering. And our reaction every time is pretty much the same one Jared himself had when he saw it: "Holy fkng shit. Have you seen this?"
This girl magician takes a very simple toolkit — 1 concealer, 2 eye pencils (black and white), 1 black liquid eyeliner, 2 matte eye shadows (black and brown), 1 loose powder, 1 hair spray (which she uses on the eyebrows), water colors (which she uses to fill in the beard), and a modified black wig — and 100% effectively turns her own ladyface into Jared Leto. We've watched it SO many times, and STILL, each time it's unbelievable. If you haven't watched it before, peep the full how-to video below, and let us know whose makeup look you think is more impressive!

Hey, Where Did Jared Leto's Eyebrows Go?? (PHOTO)
Posted

Jared Leto has no eyebrows!?!?!
We're all about moderate manscaping (especially when it comes to pop stars and mustaches -- we're looking at you Joe Jonas and The Wanted), but leave it to Jared Leto to take the trend to the ultimate level by PLUCKING OUT ALL OF HIS EYEBROWS. Honestly, as weirded out by this look as we are, we're also pretty mesmerized. Somehow Jared's eyebrowless face manages to compliment his flawless bone structure, piercing blue eyes, and perfect nose. We'd even say it's Tilda Swinton-esque! REMINDER: Jared Leto can do no wrong (but PLEASE don't shave your brows to be like him. It won't work. TRUST US).
You really have to hand it to a guy that will do anything for his art like the 30 Seconds To Mars singer did for his upcoming role in "The Dallas Buyers Club." Playing an HIV-positive cross-dresser, Jared has gone entirely hairless for the part -- in addition to his newly plucked brows, Jared waxed his legs and chest so he could rock a proper lady look (that pain is enough for an Emmy nod, if you ask us). And just in case you can't handle his naked face look at the IFP's 22nd Annual Independent Film Awards in New York City, check out THIS, THIS, and THIS photo of a very hairy Jared to calm you down. But we advise you to hold on to those images for while -- it takes FOREVER for eyebrows to grow back. Not that we'd know, or anything.

RIP Jared Leto's Eyebrows, We'll Miss You

November 28, 2012

Jared Leto on Nov. 28 and Oct. 27.
Um, Jared Leto? Is that you? *rubs eyes* Today when Terry Richardson posted pics of the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman on his blog, we barely recognized the typically scruffy-faced singer slash actor. He shaved off his ENTIRE FACE, people. Beard, mustache, brows—the whole shebang, and we're still in shock. Before you start to get worried, though, he ditched his facial fuzz for a role in Dallas Buyers Club, so we gotta give props for his serious dedication to the craft. *golf claps* In October, Jared sported a full beard and brow-age with the same slicked-back hair, but he gave off a more approachable, chic-woodsman vibe (if that's a thing). Today, his chiseled jaw is in FULL effect with a only a smudge of eye makeup below his lower lids. We have to admit we kinda miss those fuzzy bad boys framing his baby blues oh-so-perfectly. :(
But as it turns out, we weren't the only ones to do a double take when we first peeped his new look. Last night at the Gotham Awards, many journalists didn't even recognize him on the red carpet as they were doing interviews. (Man, they ain't kidding when they say eyebrows change your entire face shape.) But we need to know your thoughts on Jared's new look: do you like him better totally clean-shaven or with tons of facial fuzz? Let us know in the comments below!

Wait, Remember That Time Jared Leto And Bruno Mars Were Morphing Into Each Other? (PHOTO)
Posted

Bruno Mars and Jared Leto are hair twinsies!
OK, so we know that the Grammys were like, 1 billion months ago, and so were the 2011 GQ Man Of The Year awards, but you know what? We just happen to be lucky enough to get paid for sitting around/researching photos of Bruno Mars and Jared Leto all day, and we TOTALLY just now realized that they TOTALLY had the EXACT same hair at either event (Jared Leto at the GQ awards and Bruno Mars at last year's Grammys, specifically). Here’s photographic proof!
Here's how we arrived at this realization: It was just a regular day, we were hangin' out, enjoying a sandwich, looking at pictures of Jared Leto as Jordan Catalano, which led topictures of Jared Leto's beard, which led to pictures of Jared Leto's cross-dressing for a movie role (who can explain where internet journeys take us?!), when we discovered a photo of Jared's magnificent hairdo at the 2011 GQ Man Of The Year Awards. It was at this point we remembered that we'd recently seen Bruno Mars with the EXACT SAME 'DO at last year's Grammys! And now we've decided to spend the rest of the day trying to decide who wore it best, as the gossip mags say. Our vote goes to Bruno (Jared's is just a touch too voluminous/bordering on 'fro), but then again, we know Jared's hair is prone to getting a little out of sorts every now and then. And whenever we're feeling sad about Jared's hair, we tend to start right back where the circle began with more Jordan Catalano pictures.
